About Flipbook Craft

One of the world’s earliest moving-image devices, Flipbook Craft uses the principle of persistence of vision to bring pictures to life by turning a hand crank. It became popular in the 1890s and was used to display early commercial films and animations. As cinemas and projected films became widespread in the 1920s, it gradually declined in popularity. Today, it is mainly collected as a vintage item or used as an educational toy to teach children the principles of animation.
Creative Philosophy
Taiwan is home to many talented animation creators, but producing animation requires a significant investment of time, labor, and money. Even after completing their work, creators are often limited to selling flat merchandise such as cards, posters, and art books, which cannot fully express the dynamic nature of animation.
However, by reducing a project to 12–60 frames—or approximately 1.5–5 seconds of animation—independent creators can complete their work in less time and use Flipbook Craft to turn it into a physical product that can be displayed and sold.
By continuously improving and promoting Flipbook Craft, we hope to provide animation creators with a more accessible source of income, allowing more people to sustain their creative careers through their professional skills.
Flipbook Craft is not limited to traditional animation. Photography, video editing, illustrations combined with Live2D, and many other techniques can also be used to create suitable moving-image works. This makes it applicable to a wider range of film, video, and visual creators.
In the past, devices like these often required strong adhesives, while variations in the materials made assembly difficult. Through structural improvements, the tightness of the parts can now be adjusted, and most components can be assembled using only double-sided tape. This not only makes assembly easier but also allows children and their families to build one together, learn how animation works, and spend some time away from digital screens.
We continue to develop Flipbook Craft in different sizes, frame capacities, and materials, along with motorized and coin-operated modules. Our goal is to reduce costs and complexity while improving durability, playback smoothness, and versatility—making animation and moving-image art more accessible as physical artworks that people can collect and enjoy.
